Vostok module ports

I love the Vostok line of modules. They just appeared in VCV — and, according to the developer, they’re working on a MetaModule port.

Yes I’ve got a draft PR open here, very early stage. I’ve tried to make the panels more legible.

There is a release build from my machine here:

Things to note: I’ve had to totally disable oversampling for Atlas to get it to work, as it’s basically 4 copies of Ripples (+ extras!). Maybe we can get away with light resampling, as it might be unstable / sound not ideal.

Any early feedback welcome. We’ll be waiting for Jose at Vostok to have a test (he’s not yet set up with MM) before adding a formal release anywhere.

Thanks @hemmer!

To everyone else, I strongly recommend these modules in hardware — their ( functionality + # of channels ) / ( HP + $$ ) ratio is among the best.

Thanks hemmer, I have built a couple of these Vostok modules and it’s nice to have their virtual versions. I am now using the modules on MM now.

Will this work with the latest firmware?

Are these vostok ports completely stable, and getting an official release on 4ms’ site, or are they still only in the preview/testing stages? Thanks! :+1:

There is an issue with Atlas being unstable at high cutoff frequencies (basically we need to run it without oversampling to get CPU anywhere reasonable at the moment, it’s like 4 ripples!). I’d still like to improve that before anything official (or we can do official release without Atlas for now).

I’ve not had any feedback apart from @anDREW (and @Jose_Vostok) tbh, it’s always useful to have beta tester reports.

Ah, I see. Yes, perhaps releasing the other modules officially for now, and atlas later on when/if it can be done to your satisfaction would be best? Maybe that way, more users will use them, and give feedback on how everything else is working.

Any additional word on these? I tried Vostok Ceres tonight but I can’t get the CV signal from an envelope to kick the Ceres VCA open on MM. What signal level would it be looking for?

I was trying to get Atlas working with acceptable CPU, but I think I’ll just get v1 onto metamodule without Atlas then work on improving to add Atlas.

Can you reproduce in VCV? Or is it external hardware envelope?

It works fine in VCV. Only issue is in Metamodule trying to trigger with a hardware envelope patched in. I think when I used an internal envelope that was triggered by a gate, it worked though.

Sweet! I’m definitely interested in Atlas as well. I have a physical Atlas unit and it’s one of my favorite filters. Getting it in MM would help as I would love a second one.

I’m also curious, what drives the CPU usage of Atlas (or other filters) up so high? I’m not well versed in DSP or anything like that, so curious if there is something specific about filters that drives processing power.

The filter model in VCV Vostok derives from a Mutable Ripples simulation (with couple of extra bits), and that simulation is quite accurate and sophisticated (and not done by me I should add). You can get “close” with cheaper, simpler filter models but the challenge is finding “close enough”.

Ahh, so it’s just the nature of getting an accurate emulation which leads to high CPU usage.

Latest version (you can test here) adds Vostok Sigma to the collection, plus I managed to make a much lower CPU version of Atlas which is also now included! Let me know what you think. cc @Jose_Vostok
