How to use my MIDI Keyboard with MM?

I’ve spend hours trying to get this to work and thought it’d be easier just to ask. I feel like I’m doing everything right, but I’m just not getting MIDI in from my keyboard. Using Dev. 12.2 firmware. The weird thing is that it was working for an instance, then stopped and I can’t get it to work again. I was using TRS to Din, and plugging the MIDI TRS directly from my Launchkey into MM input 1. I assigned the Pitch Jack on the EnOsc to MIDI Note 1. In VCV Rack it was working fine. I also tried dev. version 12.3 just in case that may have worked. No luck though.

thanks for any pointers on this!

P.S. If I wanted to use the USB-C port, would I have to have a keyboard that would plug have USB-C MIDI out, or will my computer show MM as a USB destination? How does MIDI work with USB please?

Greg

The 3.5mm ports (like the one you’re using) can’t receive MIDI — they only receive audio or CV. To connect a MIDI device you’ll need a USB connection. You could use a MIDI device with a USB output, or a DIN-to-USB adaptor like this one, or if you can get the MIDI into your computer you could pipe it back out via a USB cable.

Oh also the upcoming MetaDig expander will let you use TRS MIDI directly — but 4ms hasn’t announced a release date for that yet.

I see. Thank you! I didn’t know there was such a device like the DIN-toUSB! Thanks for the link and info about the ports.

I can send the MIDI from my computer over USB, but how do I send it? I don’t see a MIDI destination in my DAW for the MM when I connect the USB-C cable. (I tried a couple cables, Including one that works fine on my Disting.)

You can’t connect a computer directly to the MM with a USB cable and transmit or receive MIDI. See this thread: Windows usb midi

I’m not sure it’s right that a computer can only be a MIDI host — you can configure a Mac as a MIDI client in a network session using the built-in Audio MIDI Setup app, and apparently there’s Windows software that can do the same thing. But I always find MIDI config tricky and I would not want to try something like this even if it’s theoretically possible.

So, yeah, @gkillmaster I would suggest a DIN-to-USB converter or a keyboard with a USB out.

Yeh, thanks! I got the idea it could be done easily due to the image below in the documentation. But I guess it’s referring to a midi controller with a USB-C out for MIDI.

WIDI Bud Pro

Since BT latency for MIDI is highly acceptable (unlike audio), I used a CME MIDI Bud Pro to stick it to the MM (connected using the adapter that came with it) and a BT MIDI keyboard. If your MIDI device does not have BT, you can use another CME device called the WIDI Master for the MIDI 5-pins

Thanks! I didn’t know about these! I think for even less money, this could end up being more versatile for me:

Have you used the WIDI Bud Pro with MPE by chance? I’d be curious if it can handle all that data over BT.

I’m still trying to find the best way to use my MIDI Keyboard and iPad to send MIDI to the MM. with the latest update v2.0.9, are there any updates to how MIDI works over USB? Is a DIN-to-USB converter still the best way to go?

I assume the Meta Module provides no power to the USB devices. So I’m not able to plug in my Launchkey Mini and it also doesn’t work with my Cobalt 8 keyboard synth that is powered. Maybe my synth is considered a host?

Would this be a good solution compared to the DIN-to-USB converter?

Thanks for any updated advice on this!

Yes that is the one for a midi keyboard, there are USB-C ones to save you using the USB-A to USB-C at the end. As for the iPad, I have no idea, sorry, but may not be $9.99.

mm can (optionally) provide power to a usb device.
cobalt looks like its usb device (usb-b socket), so should work (powered doesn’t matter)

if you have a more complex setup (more instruments) you might want to start looking at midi hubs/routers e.g. I have iConnectivity mioXM and a blokas midihub.

more expensive up front, but Ive used mine for years for solving so many different midi ‘issues’ they’ve been really worthwhile.
Id probably look at the conductive labs mrcc these days.

also other eurorack modules etc.
I use my squarp hermod alot in these situations as its has midi trs/din and usb host and device.
or, when I want to have a more desktop setup e.g. hands on I really like the squarp hapax.

ok, not saying to buy to solve the midi issues, but having a good hands-on sequencer alongside the MM is a wonderful combo  - just depends what you already might have lying around.

so yeah.. usb midi din converters are cheap and readily available, however they are ‘point to point’.
so, if your setup is more complex, and you have a more ‘permanent’ setup, perhaps looks at midi routers/hubs - they pay off in the end (in my experience)

note:
mm does not support usb hubs, so you cannot connect to usb devices to it (currently).
the iPad does support usb hubs, so you can route via it.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I use an iConnectMIDI2+ as my main MIDI interface on my desktop and for my iPad, but the MM doesn’t show up as a drive (like my Disting NT does) so I can’t route it through USB. Should the MM show up as a MIDI destination?
