Suggested plugins to use with external audio?

Dear all,

I got the MetaModule to use it as the heart/brain of a little FX box I’m building. The problem is, I am overwhelmed by all the options and plugins out there.

I guess many of you have played around a lot more with VCV rack than I have, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions of modules to work together with external audio? (I am using the Befaco Instrument Interface together with the MetaModule, mostly for vocals.)

I would be interested in trying really simple bread and butter patches such as a bit of compression, eq, reverb, delay, as a starting point. Then adding filters etc, etc. No need for oscillators, sequencers, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

i too am using one of the mm’s as an effects box. its quite overwhelming the number of effects we have to explore, especially in the airwindows brand. i have really enjoyed and gotten some success recently out of the following modules:

DELAY-
texture synthesizer (aka clouds) - this one is like a holy grail. it also has a nice reverb built in, and could be pitch controlled by a keyboard
kocmoc DDLY - very cpu friendly so i can use a whole lot of them!
airwindows tape delay - has a nice tone imo
4ms DLD - very powerful and i don’t fully understand it yet, but it seems great for doing live looping

REVERB-
airwindows galactic - very cpu friends for a stereo reverb, i usually put this on the end of my chain. you can do really big reverbs with this one.
plateaux - uses a lot of cpu but it sounds really nice when you want to play with the various knobs on it (whereas galactic can be a bit glitchy when you are turn it’s knobs).

EQ-
i dont feel there are a lot of good options, but ive used the following:
bog seq
bog PEQ - i haven’t really messed with this one much, but it seems useful?

COMPRSSION-
i also dont feel there are yet a lot of great sounding options in this category
bog LMTR - its not the cleanest sounding one when you really push high volumes into it bit it works ok for a brick wall limiter
bog CMP - same story as the LMTR

CREATIVE/MANGLING TYPE FX -
4ms pitchshifter- you could control the pitch of this with a midi keyboard
4ms detune - this can create a nice warbly vibrato
airwindows glitchshifter - does cool things to the sound! but maybe a bit too glitchy sometimes
again want to mention texture synth/clouds is such a great granular mangler
for tremolo, we dont have a lot of options, i think there is one by airwindows but i usually just put a bog LLFO into the fundamental VCA for tremelo effect.

FILTER-
bog LVCF - nice cpu friendly
4ms bfp - very cpu friendly bandpass one
nano font - a nice cpu friendly feedback style filter

DISTORTION-
i don’t know if ive found one that i really like, but the airwindows drive is decent. air windows has a ton, i really need to research these more.

UTILITY-
bog walk - creates really nice smooth random lfos. i use this all the time to control the parameters of various fx ones

ones i haven’t tried but have heard good things about:
bog PEQ14 vocoder - kind of a cpu hog, but seems like it could be great for vocals?

sorry that’s all probably tmi, but those are the fx modules i really have enjoyed exploring and running various sound sources through recently.

Oh wow thank you so much for taking the time to write this! This is really super useful. I’ll make sure to post if I make any progress

How many separate audio paths have you been able to do effects on at one time with the MM (without loading the CPU too much)? My goal is to replace a set of four stereo effects chains I have in my cabinets now. It will have to wait for the I/O expansion module of course to get that many output channels.

That’s a great list! For EQs, don’t sleep on Cloned Instruments’ Multi-Filter, a.k.a. Mutable Shelves.

Or MI Warps for vocoding, wave folding etc - can’t remember what the ‘cloned instruments’ version is called though.

Feeding signals through Rings and Elements can sound fantastic too.
