SEMI Family: 35 modules for MetaModule and VCV Rack

Hi all,

I’ve been porting my family of AU/VST plugins to Eurorack format, and the result is SEMI Family: 35 modules built from one codebase for both the 4ms MetaModule and VCV Rack 2. Most of them have live screens: scopes, tracker views, matrices, break waveforms, datamatics. They were designed with the MetaModule display in mind (about 20 FPS updates, layer-1 drawing, nothing redrawn when nothing changes).

What’s in it**

  • Breaks and drums: BREAKMED, BREAKSLICER, BREAKBEAT (BBCut cut procedures), BREAKDNA (groove DNA and spectral cross-synthesis of two breaks), GENOTYPE and LOOPGENOME (Markov walks learned from a break), SNARESTACK (snare layer aligner), VERTEX (percussion voice), DROP II, TURNAROUND
  • Bass and low end: NEUROSTACK (neuro bass switch-ups), SUBSTRATE (pitch-tracked sub rebuild), ACID (TB-3PO sequencer and Open303 voice)
  • Generative voices and noise: RETICULUM, SEEDWALK, FLOATER, QUANTA (microsound after Curtis Roads), N.M.S., CALL & RESPONSE, MODPORT (ProTracker .mod player, up to 8 channels)
  • Data and datamatics: IKEDAR, JDAT, TST_INGP, PINDATA, IKEDAT, FLOATDAT, DATASCREEN. Any file can be the sound and the picture.
  • Effects: NEXUSCLIP (clipper/limiter), ILLUSORIUM (26 psychoacoustic illusions), SPLICEBUS
  • Structure and patching: EPOCH (long-form clock), DUBPLATE (genre arrangement builder), CONDUIT (patch bay), BLACKBOX (CV/gate recorder with MIDI export), SETBOOK (scene memory with morphing)

Several modules share a 4-channel poly BUS cable (position, energy, scene, event), so EPOCH can conduct TURNAROUND, DUBPLATE, SETBOOK and others.

Each module has its own page with a screenshot, a description, a first patch and the full list of controls and I/O: [link to the repo]

Install

Download SemiFamily.mmplugin, copy it to an SD card or USB stick, and load it from Settings → Plugins. It needs firmware 2.0 or later.

What I’d like to hear about

  • Modules that don’t load, crash, or freeze the patch
  • CPU: which modules (or combinations) push the load too high. FLOATER, FLOATDAT and N.M.S. are the heavy ones.
  • Screens: anything unreadable, clipped, flickering or slow, especially with several modules on screen at once
  • File loading: WAV breaks (BREAK*, GENOTYPE, SNARESTACK…), .mod files (MODPORT), any file in the data modules
  • Knob groups and names that are confusing on the MetaModule’s own controls

Known limitations

  • ILLUSORIUM’s MASK illusion isn’t included on MetaModule.
  • SNARESTACK, GENOTYPE and LOOPGENOME rebuild their sound in the background. After loading a file or changing a setting, the new sound arrives a few seconds later.
  • Data modules read files up to 256 KB (WAV up to 10 s). MODPORT reads .mod files up to 4 MB.

Please post reports here with the module name, firmware version and a short description, and a patch file if you have one. Thanks for testing!

Looks excellent! Would love to possibly see any video clips of any in action.. for inspiration jumping in.

Thanks, these look fun. Some feedback form our automatic tests:

The image generation tests, and the cpu load tests crashed on the module after “Breakmed”, or possibly on that module itself. Here’s the log:

Loading plugin: 'SemiFamily'
Rendering SemiFamily:Acid
Rendering SemiFamily:Blackbox
Rendering SemiFamily:Breakbeat
Rendering SemiFamily:Breakdna
Rendering SemiFamily:Breakmed
[abort] data abort: pc 0xce640a70 addr 0xb4f99987 fsr 0x1

I didn’t alphabetize the modules, but if you do that then you should be able to pinpoint which module is crashing (or it could be Breakmed, if it crashes when it’s unloaded). The tests patch every jack and set all knobs and params (even invisible params) to 25%. They inject various signals in the jacks. The image generation test crashing means it wasn’t able to render the module and take a screenshot. So that might be easier to track down.

thank you so much! i’ll look into it first thing.

i believe it should be fixed now. i’m not close to my case right now so please let me know if you try. thanks!

That passes!

Thats a relief :people_hugging: thanks!

I played with a few of the modules, fun! One bit of feedback: the knobs don’t show any visual feedback in the MetaModule build. It looks like it’s just drawing the “skirt” of the knobs and not the “pointers”. On the MetaModule, knobs only have one image which is rotated as their value changes. Versus on VCV there can be multiple layers of images and only some of the layers are rotated. One quick fix you could try is changing the PNG that’s actually getting drawn with one that’s all the layers combined (skirt/base+pointer).

When you have it tested to the point you’re satisfied, you can make a GitHub release as described here: metamodule-plugin-sdk/docs/release.md at main · 4ms/metamodule-plugin-sdk · GitHub

thank you so much for your feedback, glad to hear you had fun. sure i’ll look into it asap!

it should be fixed, thank you!

pushed the release! thank you!
