Real Clouds vs Plugin

Since i guess MetaModule has better latency and higher quality audio, does this transfer to the plugin or not? Is it down to the coding perhaps so even if the hardware is better, it’s still the same as the original?

Just curious. I’ve always liked Clouds, but i’ve also always wished latency and audio quality was a bit better. Some might argue the audio quality is part of the charm of course.

clouds (hw) runs at 32k sr with 32 sample buffer… so only has 1ms of hw latency - very small.

there is some latency intrinsic to the algorithm (as with many dsp algos e.g. filters), but thats kind of fixed.

quality, well the algos are 16 bit (or 8 bit in lo-fi mode), so are designed to be ‘crunchy’. so that wont change. and yes, its part of its ‘character’.

I’ve personally found, clouds ‘quality’ to be quite dependent on how you use it including what you feed it (input gain esp)

that said, overall, when Ive implemented clouds on other hardware, Ive also felt it sounds slightly better … though perhaps thats the codec I use, or just my own bias

anyways, best way is to try it and see for yourself.
… if you don’t have MM try on vcv desktop, and see what you think.
(you’ll get a pretty similar experience on MM)

… if you dont like clouds, then in hardware you have MI Beads.
but unfortunately, looks like we will never get source code for that, so no vcv implementation.
Beads is a bit different, but I love that I have HW Beads and various versions of software Clounds - good combo.

also there are various other reverbs/granulars around, to do ‘clouds’ (well at least its ‘normal’ mode).

Cool, sounds pretty good then. I was under the impression Clouds had quite a bit of latency! 1ms is pretty good. Yes you really have to be careful with the input on it.
I wonder if it would be possible to have something like a Monsoon in software, its what i have currently with the beat repeat firmware. that would be fun to have as a plugin

I dont remember clouds hw having a lot of latency… but I sold mine when I got the percussa ssp. as my first project for the ssp was creating clouds module on the SSP

(in fairness, Id ported clouds to the Axoloti many years prior, b4 I got into eurorack)

sure, alternative firmwares can be ported easy enough.
Id assume someone has done this already for vcv !?

Yup, it’s here:

Nice. I hope we get a port to MetaModule.

Yeah, it’d be nice to see all these Mutable alt firmwares ported eventually. Seems likely.

Did not know Axoloti can run Clouds! I’ve been wanting to pick one up…

yeah, I ported it over 8 years ago

fun fact: we were first to port/release MI modules to another platform… now everyone has them.
