Just got my MetaModule a couple days ago. Feeling a little overwhelmed with the choices present. What are folks favorite plugins/patches to use? Any advice of a good place to start with it.
Welcome! The MM has a lot of power and flexibility and that can definitely make it overwhelming. If you tell us what other gear you have and what kind of music you make or hope to make, I bet people here can suggest some starting points.
Much of the stuff posted here in the Patch Gallery was made by 4ms and is very well documented, with video demos.
So that’s a great place to start if you don’t want to roll your own.
Yeah, the Patch Gallery is a good place to start.
I recommend finding a patch from the gallery that you enjoy playing with, and then exploring the rest of the modules from one of the plugins in that patch. Most modules have manuals, and it’s handy to open the manual up for the modules on your computer as you explore it on the MetaModule. Or getting to know the modules first in VCV Rack is a good way, too.
There are some Omri Cohen videos that use the MetaModule, too, you may find inspiration there.
An interesting challenge could be to give yourself a goal: “Make a duo-phonic synth voice” or “Make a drum sequencer” or “Make an evolving drone” and then use the Module Finder to pick each type of module you need to create the patch (in VCV or on the MM). Getting comfortable with the ModuleFinder and browsing by tags and looking for low-CPU alternatives is a useful part of the MM workflow.
But, yeah have fun, and always feel free to post here if something’s not making sense!
(and ps, keep your firmware updated, it’s possible if you bought it from a shop that it’s been on the shelf and has older firmware)
Another great starting point is to use Meta as a “filler” module, where you do a patch with the rest of your system and right when you get to the point where you go “Ah, I wish I had …” find something in the MetaModule library that does that and much more.
