I’m curious what mixers you all have used that work well in Meta Module. Having a headphone and line out are helpful but not neccesary.
Thanks for any feedback on this!

I tried the Nano Perfomance Mixer and it works pretty well except I’m not getting stereo out of the headphone jack. Maybe that’s to be expected?
The physical jacks on the Meta Module can’t output a stereo signal. You can get a stereo signal from it by outputting the left and right channels separately and using another module to merge them. I use the ALM HPO.
On reflection it’s weird that the Performance Mixer includes stereo jacks ported from the hardware module. There’s no stereo signals in VCV Rack either.
Thanks for this info. I wasn’t sure how stereo would be handled. handled.
for the most part I just use Befaco Output (early diy version).
(these days, Id be very tempted with the newer Befaco Output Bus, as its seems its an output combined with stmix, which I also like a lot)
mostly, because I put it in a small case, with an eagan matrix as I want it portable. so I can patch wherever I need to - in my ‘music studio’, in my dev setup, on the couch ![]()
Ive found that with modules like these (e.g. percussa, eagan matrix) that have an involved interface, for me really benefit from this portability.
as for mixing within that small rack (e.g. MM/EM), I just mix in the MM.
for more general mixing, I’ll usually do this in a daw on my Mac, or connect into my main rack.
(in my dev setup, IF I need to get audio to computer, I’ll tend to use my SSP as an audio interface, so mix that way)
Interesting to hear. So, funny you mention the Befaco Output Bus because I have one here in a box ready to send back. Only because I felt like I’d have to pair it with another module that would allow me to control volume on each of the stereo pairs. But maybe I should think about keeping it. I did’t want to buy a host of stereo strips for this purpose. But now you have me wondering if I should keep the output bus and find a way to make it work. There is so much packed into it and the size is great.
Or I could get a Toppobrillo MiniMix!
Would be nice not to tie up the MM with my mixing needs.
I use a Minimix, it rules.
yeah, I guess on the output bus it depends if the inputs to it also have gain control. usually for me they do.
in my main rack, Ive tend to have multiple mixers/vcas, so sub mixes rather than one mix mixer,.
(hmm, now you have me thinking I should buy an output bus module for it
)
if thats not the case, then I really like my STMix + Output combo. for 10hp (?) its a really good combo.
And, I just realized Minimix works with CV as well!
Do you know the Output Bus? Wonder if it could work well in conjunction with the output but, or maybe there is too much overlap there. The output bus has 1/4" line level outputs along with headphone out.
I don’t think they have gain control on the inputs on the Output Bus. That is the thing holding me back.
I know, but sorry, realised I wasn’t clear.
my point was, I control the gain level going into the mixer module (via various submixers and vca), so I don’t really need levels on the (final) mixer module itself.
currently (in main rack) its STMIX (which does have input gain control) into another OUT module.
why I might be interested in OUTPUT BUS is, it’d free up STMIX as another sub mixer (and the output module I could use in another rack)
O, I see what you mean!
For my live sets, I use a simple line level 1U rack mixer from Behringer (yeah, I know). It is fed the Four stereo signals from my cabinet, and the extra feeds from keyboard synths. I do all my effects and location modulation in my cabinet, the mixer is primarily there to match levels to the venue’s sound system. The mixer was very inexpensive (under US$200) and has a built in headphone amp for monitoring.
This question comes up often on modular boards, “Internal in cabinet mixers or external stand alone ones?” and for me, in cabinet mixers are for mixing PARTS of a patch, external mixers are for mixing PATCHES. I typically run 4 stereo feeds from a iPad/SSP combo, but the MM may take over much of that work (especially since some gigs are non-computer/iPad venues). The mixer I use can take 8 stereo feeds.
There’s so many ways to approach this. For me, the mixer is a tactile control surface that I play like an instrument. So putting it inside the MM is not a good fit for me. I use a Bored Brains Xport to convert six modular level signals into six line level balanced signals, which I mix with an old Mackie mixer. I’ve had fun using the FX send and returns on the Mackie connected to the MM for external effects that can be modulated and manipulated within MM or by other modular sources. If I want to go very compact, I have a physical 4ms Listen Four Quarters in my rack.
I have used Mackie mixers a bunch with my Eurorack and have never needed any level conversion modules in front of them. They may not be balanced, but because they are pretty hot signals, it has never been a problem.
I also like to have manuel controls on the mix things, so I use the novation Launchcontrol XL, which looks like a mix table.
I have the metaIO expander, what is very good to have lot of inputs outputs.
In MM, I really like the MsHack ‘MiX 4 Channel’, which provide stereo INs, 4 sends, EQs, and PAN.
I combined the sends of 2 of them, to have 8 inputs and 4 sends in total.
And I use the novation XL for the level of the 4 sends (3 rows for FX sends, and faders for dry MIX).
