Fullscreen Module View in Knob Set

Just downloaded the latest beta dev version: v2.0.0-dev-10.2—what an awesome update! The fullscreen mode for modules with graphics is super cool, and it sparked an idea!

What I think would be amazing is if, in the ‘knob set,’ you could select a favorite module to view in fullscreen mode. This would allow you to quickly access and interact with your chosen module directly from the knob set.

Additionally, if the module is larger than the display, moving a hardware knob could adjust the screen to focus on the relevant part of the module.

Additionally, this could introduce a new “Fullscreen Mode” option, accessible via the main menu. By turning the endless rotation knob, you could jump between different modules in fullscreen mode, making it a seamless way to navigate and interact with multiple modules.

What would also be handy is that if you’ve selected the fullscreen mode, you could directly move a knob in the module with a single click on the rotation knob.

  1. Edit mode and cable view
  2. Knob mode
  3. Fullscreen mode with direct interaction without needing to learn the knobs
    (with the rotation knob)

In fullscreen mode, when you turn the rotate button, you can quickly scroll through your (patch) modules. Once you click on a module, you enter the knob interaction mode. Here, you can scroll through all the knobs within the module. After clicking again, you can directly adjust a specific knob in the module.

Using the ← button, you return to the main menu. Clicking on the eye icon switches it to the closed eye icon, taking you back to edit mode.

For a live performance, this feature can be very useful because you can’t assign (learn) all the knobs of a module. You want to quickly adjust a knob without navigating through menus and systems. This can be done seamlessly in edit mode.

I don’t need to see all the connections and cables during a performance.

Ok, so what you’re describing is that in performance mode, instead of showing the patch with modules at 75% height in rows, they are full-screen, and cables are turned off. And, clicking on a knob lets you immediately control it. And while viewing a module, it scrolls left and right if you move a knob offscreen.

Yeah, I’m thinking something like this. Though the full-screen patch view could be an option you can set in either mode (zoom in/out) with or without cables.

I’m not sure I get the “favorite” module idea. Switching knobsets while playing would bring that knobset’s “favorite” module to fullscreen view?

Yes, that performance mode sounds amazing! Let me explain the “Favorite Module View” feature a bit more. In VCV, when you create a “knob set” with the MetaModule, you can assign different modules to each set for fullscreen viewing. For example: in “Knob Set 1,” you could choose the Ensemble Oscillator as the fullscreen view, in “Knob Set 2,” the Mini PEG, and in “Knob Set 3,” the Fundamental Scope. Then, when you’re in performance mode, you can quickly switch between fullscreen views using the button combination (<- + Rotate knob).

This way, you link a “knob set” to a specific module view in the performance mode.

(Another tip) Yesterday, I spent some time experimenting with the latest beta version 10.2, and it took me quite a while to get something like the VCO Lab working properly. I think it would be helpful if CPU-intensive modules with oversampling settings defaulted to a lower quality, ensuring they run smoothly right out of the box.

I often hover around 90-93% CPU usage. Maybe running at 44kHz could also be an option?

I’ll be the first to buy the NextGen MetaModule with a (NXP i.MX 8M Plus) Quad-core Cortex-A53 1.8 GHz . Especially with delays (which I use a lot), this would be a fantastic update!
