Just released v1.6.7, which adds a new feature that’s been much requested here: (Semi-)live patch refreshing
If you send an updated patch file over wifi (or update it on an SD card or USB drive), the file will be updated immediately. If it’s playing, then the audio will automatically fade down and fade back up with the updated patch.
Note that to use this feature you have to pick one workflow and stick with it: Once you start modifying your patch on the MetaModule, then you’ll need to revert or overwrite your changes to update it from VCV. This isn’t any different than how it’s been since day 1 (e.g. if you changed a patch and saved it on the MetaModule, and then sent a different set of edits to the same file over wifi), it’s just that the VCV->MetaModule workflow is lot faster now.

Hi, new here, but very excited! I tried updating the firmware by both a USB drive and the SD card and I followed the instructions, placed the firmware folder onto both, go to update firmware and nothing. It just says, Insert an SD car or USB drive containing a firmware update file.
So I noticed that the wifi-filesystem.img in the metamodule-firmware was a zipped drive, so can Meta Module unzip files in the hardware? On the off chance it needed the folder to be in a zipped format I decided to NOT unzip the metamodule-firmware in case that was the issue. Nope, it still does not find the firmware file. So I’ve tried the firmware update with the folder zipped and unzipped with no success. I have had no issues transferring patches over Wi-Fi to the micro sd card though, so I know it’s reading the micro sd card.
Yeah, the firmware should be unzipped — it should be a folder named metamodule-firmware
(with no numbers or anything like that at the end of the folder name).
Yep did it both ways. Is it updating for you?
I suggest deleting all firmware files and folders off your sdk card and trying again, following these instructions step by step:
Don’t rename anything or do anything special or take any shortcuts-- just do exactly as described in the Docs.
Note that the SD card needs to be in FAT32 or ExFAT format. In case there’s some bad blocks in the disk, you might even need to reformat it.
I got it to work. I didn’t know the SD card couldn’t be inserted before you went to settings and THEN to insert the SD card afterwards for it to see the file. Thank you.
Great, glad you got it updated!
You’re supposed to be able to have the SD Card inserted before you go to Settings (it may take it a couple seconds to finish scanning the drive), so that’s odd it didn’t work. Pulling it out and putting it back in will force the page to re-scan it.
That’s what worked for me. I had this sneaky suspicious after I VERY carefully read the steps. If the sd card was already in the device, I waited for half an hour, like literally left and came back, but the red text was just staring back at me. I also reformatted the memory card several times. But what worked for me was having NOTHING in the micro sd card slot, went to settings and when the red text said to insert an SD card, inserted the sd card and it worked. I’m on PCB version p11.
Hmm… ok strange. That may be a bug in the older firmware you had installed? I wonder if now that you’ve updated your firmware if it detects the update file correctly now (it’ll detect the same file update file you used to install the current firmware)?
