I live in a remote location so I have to plan my modular purchases 3-6 months in advance. It would be helpful if there was a status update post or thread for the expanders?
My next window to purchase the MM+expanders is the end of October. Though I doubt the IO expander will be ready in time for me, I’m still holding out hope! (so I don’t have to wait another 6 months… )
The Wifi Expander is almost done in production, and assuming there are no issues, we should be shipping them to dealers at the end of the month. It might be close timing with your schedule, I don’t know.
The other expanders, I don’t have a target date, we’re just doing one at a time.
After the WiFi Expander, my vote for the next one to go to production is the I/O expander. I can work around the issue of needing more knobs/controls with midi devices, but I would really like the capacity to add more inputs and outputs.
Agree…really looking forward to the I/O’s arrival. I’ve even reserved space for my I/O… XD I hope the I/O will be produced in sufficient quantities. I have a feeling that many people will need one…
Wi-Fi Expanders can be ordered direct from 4ms here (starting November 12th), if you’d like to avoid hassles trying to figure out which dealers will have stock.
Lovely. As i said in another thread, would be wonderful if there was an option let it continuously auto-update the MM via WIFI. Maybe you could set a time of how often you want it to occur (especially if updating it is something demanding or freezes VCV briefly, then we wouldn’t want it to occur too often).
The Metamodule workflow increase is helping me bounce VCV patches quickly as I discover “woops” or “need to tweak this knob assign” etc. I am going to say this is pretty important if you are on the fence.
One quick question.
I have not used the Color status button, and don’t really use the light for status once connected. If I can find a secure way to mount it inside my case (I have a deep enough case).
Is there any future planning that you can see that my burying the button would cause problems?
that 4HP is pretty critical real estate on my fly case…
This will not help most people but I have a Sinusoda case that lets you mount modules on the side, and that turns out to be perfect for the wifi expander.
(It’s kid of hidden behind a bunch of cable extenders I use for the BeatStep Pro.)
Since it’s Wi-Fi, it has an antenna. And a basic rule of antennas is that any stuff in between the antenna and your Wi-Fi router’s antenna will make the signal weaker. Especially metal. And especially metal wrapping all the way around (like, putting an antenna inside a metal box).
So if your case is metal, and/or presumably there is a lot of metal in the modules that you place over that 4HP hole, then the Wi-Fi signal is going to get weaker. Though, if the signal was super strong to begin with, then it might still be OK.
The only way is to know if it works is to try. It will depend on the signal strength and all kinds of complex factors like how far away in all three dimensions is any kind of metal from the antenna. So if you try it, then orient it so that the top of the module (basically the part under the 4ms logo – where the antenna is) is in the most isolated part of the case, farthest from anything metal.
But – please keep in mind if you do this: if you start having connection issues (e.g. sometimes it works and sometimes it takes forever to connect, or it drops out sometimes, or only loads half the page, etc…) then the first thing to try is to take it out of the case.
I should give some clarity. I have a Mantis, mostly Polymer case, with a few pieces of metal on the important bits. my ideal spot would be closer to the plastic side than it is now.
My office wifi router is also 10 feet from my Eurorack,
Of course going on the road may change this signal strength…
There are certain kind of knobs that you also can push down - would that be an option? If so you can route what should happen when you turn the knob and what happens when you push it…
