Calibrate/Tune 4ms Ensemble Oscillator in Bitwig?

This is a beginner’s question and not sure a good place to ask.

I’m using 4ms EnOsc in MM and trying the use the HW CV Instrument Bitwig to send pitch and gate to it. I can get it to work fine but not sure how to think about tuning between software and hardware modules. In order to get the full range of tones, I had to lower the Root in EnOsc by a couple octaves before calibrating.

Do I need to have the EnOsc tuned to a certain pitch before I calibrate from Bitwig? When I tune it, will middle C on my keyboard match middle C on the EnOsc? It seems like the pitch is shifted afterwards.

Or do I even need to do the calibration at all?

Thanks for any pointers on this!

Greg

There’s no universal standard for octave naming in MIDI —different manufacturers and developers use different conventions. A given MIDI note number should always represent, say, a C or an F#, but it might be at any of various places relative to middle C depending on how the maker has set it up. So when connecting two devices, it’s normal to use various means to switch the octave settings on one or the other so they work together the way you want.

In general you shouldn’t have to calibrate virtual modules on the MM. I’m not super familiar with the EnOsc and I know it does lots of clever things with pitch so there may be complexity to navigate here, but that would require understanding how the module works rather than calibrating it.
