Audio interface ability

would be amazing at some point to be able to plug the mm into a computer (via usb-c>a cable? or perhaps a new 4ms expander module?) or ios device, and have it show as an audio/midi i/o in order to stream cv or music back forth from bitwig/ableton or drambo/mirack for examples

This is much requested!

I can see the draw to want this. But-- we have this one in the ā€œMaybe Somedayā€ pile.

Here’s the reasoning for our hesitation:

  • It’s a bit off-topic (maybe even antithetical) to the purpose the MetaModule, which is to be a platform for making music on hardware, not on a computer

  • USB Audio is a complex feature requiring lots of testing for compatibility with various OS’s, as well as handling USB issues. Also there would need to be a lifetime of support as Apple, Microsoft and various Linux distros release new versions.

  • USB Audio interfaces are already products you can buy today, and I don’t have any ideas for improvements on those devices, so we’d just be re-inventing a wheel.

So, in short, it’s possible to do, but it’s taking away from adding more modules, improving the UI workflow, improving the plugin ecosystem, and all the other things that are what makes the MetaModule unique.

ty for responding, that all makes sense! and i know there will be an expander leveraging midi out, but of course my portable/small live-set skiff will be chock full w 2 metamodules. i’m curious: will midi out also work via the usb-c on the mm, using a class compliant usb<->din adapter like this (which i currently use no problems, to pass midi to from ios apps and synths):

In theory that MIDI-USB converter dongle should work, I would hope so. Every keyboard and controller I could get my hands on worked perfectly. If it does work, will you report back here?

Also, the MetaModule only receives MIDI (so you can connect MIDI OUT from a keyboard or controller to MIDI IN on the MetaModule). We might add MIDI OUT to the MetaModule but as of now there aren’t any plugins or modules that send MIDI (I think?). It would be easy to add though.

will certainly report back on how that usb<>din adapter fares.

here’s hoping we’ll be able to leverage the 3 core vcv midi output modules at some point as id love to control some synths via mm

Thanks. I browsed around and ordered a different one, just to see. Would be good to have a recommendation/known-working one.

Ok, right, we could use the Core MIDI modules, of course. I have it on the list.

Hi - I can confirm I was able to successfully connect a MIDI OUT DIN cable from my Electra One MIDI Controller into the MetaModule USB socket using a CME U2MIDI Pro adapter. I was then able to map and use MIDI CC messages from Electra One to module knobs (e.g,. on the Befaco Noise Plethora module in MM).

One thing I then noticed is if a module’s knob is mapped to both a MIDI CC and a physical pot on the MM, the MM UI only displays knob movement from a MIDI CC change. Rotating the pot still affects the behaviour of the module, but the knob display does not show that movement.

Ok great, thanks!

Interesting bug when mapping two things to one knob. I’ll check it out.

An example case, 1010music added USB audio i/o to the Bluebox just this year. (The Bluebox product has been available for years.) As an end user the beta testing cycle seemed very difficult. I was never able to get it to work without hum and I gave up trying.

The ability to connect multi-channel audio interfaces directly to the MM would be very helpful in adding more I/O to the unit. I know the expansion modules will take care of this, but if you have some hardly used audio interfaces laying around, it would be nice to be able to use them.

@danngreen is it possible to be a midi host so we can detect the es-9 and use its power and inputs? The mpc one does this now and it was awesome. Anyways I know ur not mpc lol

The MetaModule is a MIDI host already. But I don’t think the ES-9 can act as MIDI device…? It’s an audio interface. There’s a MIDI breakout for the ES-9 but that’s regular DIN5

finally had time to do some tests with it, the ā€œyan New USB in-Out MIDI Interfaceā€ works really great thus far

I know this thread has been dormant for a while, but I wonder if anything has changed. I currently use a Percussa SSP to process and modify audio from my iPad (Loopy Pro) and would love to do the same with the MM. I would sell the SSP and buy a couple more MM if it could do that.

ive run my ipad through many effects on the the mm using an 1/8ā€ male stereo to l/r male splitter cable. but i needed to use the ā€˜bitshift gain’ airwindows module on the inputs to boost up the line signal.

Yes, the headphone out will work, but I get 8 channels of output into the Percussa using USB (through the apple dongle). I would want multi-channel conversion. Before I got the Percussa (which does 24 channels max, I just don’t use that many), I used an Expert Sleepers ES-8, which I sold. Might have to get another one.

ah gotcha, yeah that would be quite interesting to be able to route multiple channels of cv from miirack/apematrix to different things in the mm.

As Dan put it upthread:

Given that tradeoff, I’d vote no on this feature.

i agree. would love to see those much requested quality of life features implemented first : per patch rate/buffer, dynamic plugins loading, stacked mults, proper midi cv-cc/midi modules module ported, wav recorder module, midi program change loads a patch, etc

I would LOVE to be able to set a stereo output / mix into the USB to connect my phone and record the audio while shooting videos . or to connect my tonverk to MM’s usb port to sample straight into tonverk.
