I use Pam’s Pro as my master clock and for other functions. Any alternative to Pam’s for MetaModule or would I have to just chain a bunch of existing plugins together?
depends on the functions you use on Pams
but yes, likely you’d have to use multiple modules to cover many of the different functions Pams does.
ofc, this is not ‘bad’ - its kind of the point of modular, having different modules do different functions.
the rise of multi-function modules in eurorack is because of cost restrictions of buying multiple modules. ( * ) .
pams is great because it replaces many modules , so less cost to consumer, also less modules = less HP = less cost !
( *) you could also argue less patching, but frankly you often just substitute patching for menu diving … so complexity is not really reduced.
that does not exist in virtual modular (with free modules), adding modules doesn’t cost more, nor take up more space
so multi function module don’t make as much sense with virtual modular. also UI constraints w/ virtual modular make them not that attractive to use.
(there are some exceptions to this… in particular where multi functions are combined to create more than the sum of its parts)
For the core Pam’s function of a clock source with multiple dividers/multipliers synced to the same master tempo, try Clocker2 from sickozell. (It can also do adjustable pulse width.) But for everything Pam’s can do beyond that — different shaped modulators, random skips and levels, quantization, Euclidean rhythms, logic operations, etc. etc. — you’ll need to connect other modules.
I wonder if there’s anything Pam’s can do that the MM can’t do with the currently available plug-ins.
It would really be cool if they could port Pam’s to MetaModule format but I doubt that will happen. It would be nice to have Impromptu Clocked as an alternative. I use Pam’s on all of my VCV Rack patches because it is so versatile and really easy to use.
I am building a tiny rack with MetaModule and Disting EX and would like to avoid having to buy a hardware Pam’s due to the price. As it is, this build is over $1500!
That is what I am about to find out with my new mini rack that will be centered around a MM and a Disting EX.
Looks like Clocker 2 will do the job. In a pinch, I could also just use an LFO and a clock divider…so no biggie really.
whilst BusyCircuits have got a VCV rack version, its a commercial closed source project. you could reach out to them to see if they would like to port it.
probably don’t mention that you want it ported to you dont have to buy one
Personally, I find the way to approach virtual modular , is not to think about what eurorack modules I would like to have/replicate, but rather what ‘functions’ do I need from a patch - then build these.
the point being, you rarely need every function of Pams at one time in a single patch, and to replicate ALL of Pams in one patch would be impossible/unwieldy - so patch what function you need.
I found with other virtual modulars, those that try to replicate ‘real’ synths/modules tend to get disappointed / frustrated after a while. as even if you have a one module that replicates the ‘tactile’ experience is completely missing.
in contrast, those that play to virtual modulars strengths, the ability to build something new and bespoke tend to have a lot better experience.
ofc, ymmv.
I absolutely understand what you are saying. I have been using VCV Rack for a while now and Pam’s is one of the centerpieces of my virtual rig. That is why I am looking for a replacement. It does not have to be Pam’s, it can be Clocked or something else. I am also considering that my new rack will also have a Disting EX and am figuring out how that will work with MM. Pam’s is nice in that it has 8 outputs that can be individually configured and it can do a range of things. Given that MM is a different platform with more limited module options, I will just have to chose different options for what I am trying to do.
