A couple feature requests for the Button Expander

For the upcoming Button Expander module hardware, I was thinking about a couple requests.

  • Being able to assign the Encoder press to a button would be helpful as it could speed up selecting and assigning values. You could use the Encoder to select the value and use the button press to confirm. Sometimes the select and press with the Encoder slows me down.
  • The ability to switch Knob sets left or right using button presses would also be helpful. I do not use more than one Knob set on a patch currently and quick switching of sets might help. Could MIDI assignment of this be done also?

Just in case you didn’t know- there’s a shortcut for switching knob sets. Hold the back button and turn the encoder.

@Zymos - I have tried using the knob set switching shortcut a bit today. It is a bit cramped to do but somewhat doable for now. Glad that it works while in a patch and not just on the knob set display.

Anyone have any idea when the Button Expander might be available? I thought it was likely to be “second half of 2025” and we are nearly half way through that period with no release date that I am aware of.

We have them in our shop, so far passing all the tests, and the ship date will be announced shortly

Interesting… In general yes it’s not difficult to use the buttons for GUI navigation. The buttons couldn’t ALSO be used for mappings of course. I can see six buttons: rotary left, rotary right, rotary click, back button, push+turn left, push+turn right. Maybe the other two could be something else (Home and KnobSet view?). Interesting idea, I hadn’t considered use of the expander for navigation… Hmmm… I’ll play with it.

Edit: Next/Prev knobset could be what the final two buttons do, of course.

Edit: Another idea is to have each Button jump to a particular knob set.

Assigning knobsets to buttons would definitely be useful. I had not considered quick switching of knob sets like that.

Just wanted to find out if I could map the eight buttons to play like a keyboard, setting the range of value to match the OSC. Maybe I’m asking the wrong question :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
