Life Hack: Use a usb KVM switch between laptop and mm

can confirm that this 2 in 1 out bi directional usb kvm works great with the mm for running into the main kvm- so you can quickly swap between midi controller and usb drive. note: that this particular hub does not come with a usb a male<>male cable to connect to the main kvm. you will need to order that separately.

Just got the other originally posted by @offthesky link@amazon.
No problems with this one from Sabrent.
EDIT – oops
MM power does NOT stay on when rack turned off.

that doesnt seem good. my mm definitely powers off when still plugged into the sabrent kvm

Error. Sorry - does NOT stay on… I must have been tired. All good now!

Did you ever test this one and got it to work? tried that one for a sd card reader and it doesn’t work for me. might be the cable i have, no idea.

yep! the 2 kvm switches (links above) work like a charm for me. you definitely want to make sure any usb cables or adapters you use support both data+power. i found it doesnt really matter if the cables are usb 2 or 3 compliant.

the mm will actually power on my kvm array, so i dont need the laptop on to switch between midi keyboard and usb thumb drive. great since mm doesnt support hubs atm.

Ok, good to know. Yeah maybe it’s the cables, i’ll have to order one that says data to make sure. I did notice that the MM could not power it on if i only had the kvm switch attached.

that’s odd- my mm is able to power both kvms if the laptop is not on or connected to them. perhaps for you its the combined power draw of your thumb drive or midi controller plus the kvms (although they use very little power). ive found some thumb drives require more power than others. and that is definitely the case for midi controllers.

i removed the thumbdrive, it still can’t power it, so its not that…

anyways,'ve figured i’ll just get the wifi expander instead, that will be a game changer.

agreed - especially now that dan is adding a dedicated wifi transfer button in the vcv module!!

yeah, that will be incredible  It went from “eh? couldn’t really care less, maybe sometime in the future or if i get tired of the cable to the switch…” to "I want to travel to the US, SLAP $100 in Dan’s hand and in a Gollum voice say “It neeeeds it! It waaaants it!”

Sorry, for someone that is new – can I somehow use USB to transfer patches? Or how does this work?

you can’t just connect a usb c cable between the mm and your laptop- not yet at least. so for now using a kvm switch as ive outlined above, or the new wifi expander (which im finding is actually faster so far than the kvm method). i highly recommend the new wifi expander! but for those without extra space in their rack, the kvm setup is the next best thing
