How are you using the meta module?

Hello there,

having meta for over 1 month and still love it. I usually use it as sequencers and mixers. can’t wait the recording the sd card function update

Here is a short techno setup with meta and hardware modules

The system contains euclidean rhythm, mutable stage, stmx, 2 DLD. I usually setup everything in vcv but still do little adjust (changing cables, midi range,…) in meta module.

finally recently got the chance to take the mm rig out for a live drone ambient show here in denver. and of course they worked swimmingly! totally in love with this module (despite any growing pains). eventually want to do live sets with only the mm rig but we’ll of course need the sts working for that.

here’s one of the pre show rehearsals if anyone’s curious:

Hey this looks (and sounds) cool! So do I understand correctly that you’re taking samples from that record? What’s sts? (not familiar with the lingo)

sts is the “stereo triggered sampler” module that 4ms will add into the metamodule at some point in the future (soonish hopefully!).

in the 1st section of the video 0:30-4:00, i am feeding the vinyl through a long convolution reverb patch on an old iphone 5s. the 5s is feeding into the metamodule on the left- which has a dual looper+reverb effect patch running. im just placing the needle onto the record for a few seconds at a time but the convolution IR is long enough that it will create a 10 second tonal wash with each needle drop. around 4:00 into the video i bypass the convolution, and start messing with the turntable arm directly to use it as a texture generator. the whole turntable really is quite resonant and it was difficult to keep it from feeding back when i performed with all this live since they had 8 speakers surrounding the room. one thing that’s interesting, that i don’t demonstrate in the video, is that you can also literally sing into the turntable’s tonearm. makes for some nice eerie vocals.

Very nice! That’s definitely flying by the seat of your pants sampling! If the STS module was available in MM, would you ditch the turntable? It does add something a bit indeterminate, though, although the audience probably wouldn’t realise it.

Seeing that Andreas Vollenweider LP is a real pluck from the past. He was entirely self-taught as a harpist - like Harpo Marx.

definitely not the turntable is way too much fun and also provides something very immediate and interesting to me. i might end up getting a koma elektronic field kit workstation to sometimes use instead of a turntable. or there’s always the prepared guitar i have. with the sts though, i might be able to ditch koala sampler (that im using on the 2nd iphone 6s) but i need to get this ellitone midi keyboard working with mm first. hopefully dan can figure it out.

that’s cool to know about andreas vollenweider! i actually had never heard of him before finding this vinyl in the dollar bin a week ago. the album is pretty endearingly cheesy but does have really some amazing moments. like the intro of the first track on that album is just them making a bunch of weird noises which made for a great abstract texture layer running into the mm looper.
